What can Tape-201 do the original can't?
The original hardware can be difficult to source and should you even find one in working condition, it will come at a premium. Arturia has removed all the hurdles and struggles and replaced them with a convenient, affordable and indistinguishable plug-in replica. Though not just a cut-and-paste copy, the Tape-201 houses new features that make it more in line with the demands of modern players, going above and beyond what was possible on the hardware original.
Firstly, the nature of the Tape-201 being a plug-in solves many problems, workflow, creativity and resources. Now, with the power of your DAW, you can use this on as many tracks as you want within a mix. Why not experiment with drums or samples or other instruments you may not conventionally use with the hardware? Additionally, the automation possibilities of your DAW open up new worlds for evolving, dynamic echoes and reverb that shift with your music for a more expressive sound.
Along the main panel of the interface, not much has changed. If you're an owner of the original or have fantasised about owning one for a long time, you'll be right at home. The addition here is the multiple stereo modes and stereo controls at your disposal. Now, you can use the Tape-201 in Mid/Side, Left/Right or Ping-Pong mode, allowing for more creative use of the stereo image in your sound design.
Opening the advanced panel, you'll find all of the new additions to the plug-in. A three-band input EQ lets you tailor the sound of your dry signal before hitting the plug-in. This can be used either to creatively manipulate the sound of your source or can be used to tame harsh frequencies that would be enhanced with each delay repeat.
Most significantly, the modulation section via onboard LFO and Envelope follower is the perfect way to add additional movement to your sound. Multiple waveforms and up to 16 LFO destinations let you modulate virtually any parameter inside the plug-in. Add movement to your stereo image or modulate the repeat times, get creative!
Take your sounds to outer space
The vintage, warbling sound of analog is about the furthest thing away from the modern, DAW-based recording climate that's the industry standard today. Tape-201 takes your sounds back to a time when analog was the only recording method known, but lets you apply it in the digital world to do things you could only dream of when the hardware original first came out.
Unmistakably '70s, the Tape-201 is the most authentic tape delay software ever made, encapsulating the signature grit, instability and texture that the hardware had and distilling it into an affordable, reusable solution.
Combining both delay and reverb with up to 12 different modes using the same three active tape heads at any one time, Tape-201 offers a huge variety of tones that you can explore. Enable only the tape delay, reverb only or a combination of both to add dimension to your drums, guitars, vocals, synths or any other instrument or sound in a mix.
Utilising only the delay, Tape-201 can add rhythmic complexity and excitement to stale drum loops or can be used as a creative effect to be 'played' with your electric guitar, creating the classic "call and response" you've heard on countless records since the '70s. Enhancing your delay with the onboard spring reverb tank, you can inject a harmonically lush ambience to your repeats, giving them additional space and dimension. Perfect for synthesizer pads or sustained vocal notes, blending them together is made easy with the independent volume controls for each.
Adjusting the physical tape characteristics on the hardware unit could prove tedious at best. You may risk damaging the tape or creating an undesirable sound that's difficult to reverse. Tape-201 lets you virtually go into the guts of the machine and adjust parameters that would simply be impossible on a physical unit. Increase the Flutter, Motor Inertia and Noise levels to add enhanced instability and unpredictability to each delay repeat. Perfect for creative sound design for games or experimental compositions.
This can all be done in multiple stereo modes; left/right, mid/side or ping-pong, offering three different ways to adjust the stereo image of your reverb. It doesn't stop there, using the different LFO waveshapes and 16 destinations, you could even modulate the stereo width using the Rate Offset and Width controls for even more spatial processing.
Powered by technology
Using proprietary modelling algorithms, Tape-201 can recreate the iconic effects down to the component parts to create unrivalled realism and immersion. Unmatched in analog emulation, Tape-201 is powered by TAE and Phi technologies. TAE offers component-level modelling to accurately present the characteristics and behaviour of the effect, whilst Phi's state-of-the-art physical modelling brings the acoustic properties into the virtual world for hyper-realism. The result is truly a next-level sound that is indistinguishable from the original to add to your productions.
