The comprehensive green overdrive pedal? With history on its side, the Maxon OD808 Overdrive Pedal stakes a big claim for being one of the best overdrive pedals ever invented. The first iteration of the TS808 was a Maxon OD808 and despite being more commonly associated with other brands, the OD-808 has all the vintage feel and character associated with the highly sought-after originals. The secret behind this legendary tone lies in the design which was particularly radical for the late 70s; rather than having separate amplifier and clipping stages like most overdrive pedals, the OD808 distorts the signal in the amplifier stage yielding a smoother, milder, more natural-sounding distortion than a separate clipping stage. This is what makes the op-amp so important and why the JRC4558 is held in such high regard.
The only noticeable change between earlier 808s (of both brands) is this reissue Maxon OD808 has a lower noise floor so performance is audibly quieter despite still utilising the same buffered bypass approach as the originals. Older 808?s are susceptible to microphonic noise due to static electricity build-up on the chassis. To rectify this issue, Maxon reversed the positions of the output resistors on the reissue OD808 and their values increased in order to reduce noise levels. This change to the circuitry has no audible effect on the outputted tone, except reducing the noise levels. All the articulate definition and lasting sustain remains, just with less unwanted noise.
