The JSP's shells are built with 9 plies of mahogany wood. One of the more expensive and less common tonewoods, mahogany provides strong low-end and warm, highly resonant tones that are perfect for a drum set of this size. While these drums are much smaller than the average shells, there's still more than enough flavoursome punch to make a statement in a number of genres, from bosssa nova to rock, and even latin music. Much like the heads you'd find on a good-quality electronic drum kit, mesh drum heads are a popular choice because they retain the feel and response of a traditional drum skin, but make drastically less sound.
